The Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC) is pleased to present the Annual Fall Regatta on the beautiful San Mateo Marina Lagoon. Our regatta marks the end of the Fall racing season in California, and as such, attracts a great crowd of rowers and spectators alike.
Almost 150 crews, from Juniors to Masters, race over a 5,000m course. Through the twists and turns of the lagoon, boats of all sizes compete including: eights, fours, doubles, pairs and singles.
Hundreds of spectators come out to support and watch the Fall Regatta. Viewing is available from:
See our course map for details.
Racing starts at 8.30am and finishes around 1pm . A prize giving then follows, where medals are awarded to the winning crews. Pick up a regatta program at Parkside Aquatic Center or check the event schedule online, to see who is racing when.
Parkside Aquatic Center is Regatta Head Quarters and where all the boats launch and dock. Join us here for breakfast and lunch. Pick up a funky regatta t-shirt, and peruse some of the other vendors on site. Meet the athletes and see some incredible racing shells. Note: Parking is challenging close to HQ.
We look forward to seeing you there!
There are two basic types of rowing: sweep rowing and sculling. In sweep rowing, athletes hold one oar with both hands. In sculling, the athletes have two oars, one in each hand.
Although spectators will see many different races, there are only six basic boat configurations. Sweep rowers come in pairs (2s), fours (4s) and eights (8s). Scullers row in singles (1x), doubles (2x) and quads (4x). Sweep rowers may or may not carry a coxswain (cox-n), the person who steers the boat and serves as the on-the-water coach. All eights have coxswains, but pairs and fours may or may not. In all sculling boats and sweep boats without coxswains, a rower steers the boat by using a rudder moved with the foot .
