The Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC) is a nonprofit community organization focusing on human powered
water sports including rowing, sculling, paddling and dragon boating. Formed in 1999, BIAC
is a registered 501(c)(3) corporation which provides a tax deduction for many donors making a
charitable contribution.
BIAC is run by the volunteer efforts of its 300 members and affiliates. We are funded through a combination of
membership dues and fundraising activities. The Center houses over 150 boats including club boats for
members’ use and storage of members’ private boats. We It provide launching docks for access to the
waterways surrounding Bair Island and the Port of Redwood City. BIAC regularly hosts community
learn-to-row and at-risk youth programs, provides the home for junior rowing
programs, and supports ecotourism and restoration of the local Baylands habitat.
This spring, BIAC has been presented with an extraordinary opportunity. Each April Webcor, the
largest general contractor in the Bay Area, sponsors a Rebuilding Day. They donate their time and
talents to repair and upgrade a local community organization. In collaboration with Rebuilding
Together Peninsula, a part of a national organization whose mission is to revitalize housing and
communities, BIAC has been selected as a 2007 recipient!
This generous commitment will greatly enhance the BIAC facility. To date it has resulted in approaching a
ten-year lease from the landlord, CEMEX. The plans for the April 28th
Webcor Rebuilding Day are well underway.
But now is the time for the BIAC community to take further steps to the future.
We can do important work in tandem with the Webcor Rebuilding Day so that BIAC can better serve its
membership and meet community needs as a unique aquatic center. Leveraging Webcor’s contribution,
the BIAC board has asked the BIAC community to raise $80,000 in new funds to secure additional
critical facility needs. Several BIAC community members have already committed to fund almost half
of this goal.
Now it is up to the other BIAC community members to step forward in support. Funds will provide:
- Cover-All storage shed of about 60 by 100 feet to protect boats
or a Focus Racks system to facilitate racking of rowing shells and increase our safety and shell capacity
- Funds to pay for Rebuilding Day plans and permits
- Purchase of dock floats
- Selected other facility priorities to be addressed as funds are available
Your involvement and support are needed. Please join the BIAC community and step into the future by
making your commitment as a volunteer committee member and/or donor. Check on the campaign's current status here too!
