Board Meeting Minutes

September 15th, 2011

Meeting started at 6:20.  

Attending Board Members:  Carol Olson, Luis Yanez, Cynthia Neuwalder, Pat Worthington

Other Members and Guests:  Vicky Bialas, Julie Powelson, Marsha Atkinson, Deb Stern

 

Financial Report:

Cynthia reports it is looking good. $137k in MM account.  $42k greater than the beginning of the year (due to changes in the May 1 - April 30  billing structure and good membership ‘management’).

 

Old Business:

Ramp:

-To start at 8 am on Monday, 9/19

-Increased cost due to replacement of cleats & screws

-Voted to approve costs for increased work

-Luis Y. to keep as cost effective as possible

 

Lot:

-Meeting next week to discuss use of the new South lot, including paddling rentals for the public.

-Will need electricity, gates, fencing.    

-Approved making Mike Martinez manager of the current launches’ lot

-Pat to request inventory / map of the lot

-Looking at large tent (35’ x 80’) again.  Will work with RWC to get permits/determine fees.  

 

LTR for government:

-One 8+ practicing now, another expected to start soon.  Same teams as last year (RWC Council vrs Planning Commission) .

-No paddling now – will do in spring.

 

Security:

-Cynthia working with the police re: sleeping in cars / tent / thefts, other issues around BIAC

-Signs to be put up on ramp:  “Slippery when icy or wet”

-Additional signs (“Members only”) to come

 

CDBA:

-Met and have understanding of situation.  Both sides to review budgets, working together to determine what type of membership fee is "reasonable"

Nominating Committee:

- (Held in closed meeting;  discussed whether a potential candidate met the requirements for board members; agreed that interpretation of the by-laws included the candidate)

 

New Business:

 

-Candock squares and skids:  4 corners of dock need to be replaced.

-Cost $450 to $500. Approved the cost

 

Recreational rentals / paddling:

-RWC would like to see several things, including renting kayaks, paddling, canoes, install showers.   “BIAC potentially a Human powered hub for bikers, runners, water sports.”  Details to be determined on management, administration, feasibility, etc. in a meeting next week.

 

Clean up day for yard and boathouse:

-Cynthia looking for people / volunteers to help run the day.

-Shooting for a date in October.

-Nora Cain to run boathouse clean up.

 

Committee Reports:

ROC: (none)

Communications: (none)

Membership: (none)

Social:  Party for Menlo Masters Swimmers, organized by Vicky Bialas, was a huge success.  We received a check for $392 for extra funds they received for the picnic.  

 

RET:

-Kashper back.  Rowers need to be certified by Sullivan or Leverenz  to use the Kaschper.

-Additional bow/stern lights arrived

 

Facility:

-Ramp to be done next week; rub rails (dock bumpers) are here. Installation being done by Mark Greenough.

 

Launches:

-2 new engines arrived; to be installed and maintained. One older engine refurbished and re-installed.  Mike Martinez to sell 2 engines, give away 3rd broken engine (blown gasket).

 

Safety:

-J. King purchased safety kits to be included in the launch kits

-Putting in the coaching lockers

 

Events - BIAC Regatta: Sunday, November 6, 2011.  J. Powelson, chair

-T-shirt vendor to bring equipment and give BIAC 15% of the income on shirts

-Gel Seat vendor to be at regatta

-Volunteer coordinators set

-Sponsorship committee set:  Goal to get 100% participation w/matching plan

-Sharon Weinbar has some ideas on increasing fund raising / grant access for BIAC

 

Future Foundation (will hold meeting about use of the South lot next week)

 

Program Reports:

-LTR: 56 students (6 full sessions).  Very successful program and Novices are set

-Sunday crew up and running.

-Sculling sessions still struggling. May be an awareness issue.  To be announced through BIAC_ac.
